Default Coolant Problems

My audi had a failure where the fitting for one of the pipes that connects to the thermostat housing , i replaced the thermostat and also the coolant bottle and cap because the coolant bottle actually popped and was bubbled at the top , but i still have this problem where my temperature gauge for the most part always sits a 0 , only occasionally it will sit at 90 where its supposed to be and although i cant see any leaks everytime i sit in traffic i get steam pouring out of my bonnet and when i switch the car off then i get all the coolant leaking out the bottom of the car yet i just cannot see where its leaking from and when i fill it up again it doesnt leak , this problem only happens in stop start traffic , i have filled the coolant backup and turned the car on and revved it between 1500 and 2000rpm till engine is warm so it is not an air bubble in the system , has anybody else ever had this problem ? would love to know where this mystery leak is and what the cause is

Your post makes me wonder which engine you have in your car. Not knowing, I will guess and say that the coolant temp sensor is bad.

Sounds like two problems, 4Driver4 I suspect is correct, but you are also overheating in traffic, which makes me think that you are having trouble with a cooling fan. Without knowing your setup I can't be more specific, but it could be a clutch on a mechanical fan, or a problem with an electrical fan, my A4 has both types.

That's a B6, you will get folks who know the car better over there. Anyway, re-reading your post I wonder if you are not overfilling the cooling system. I've done that, and Audis really don't like it. The bottle is part of the pressure system, unlike most cars, and is an expansion tank with an air spring. When overfilled the fluid has nowhere to go, and is just forced out at the weakest point. For me it was the hoses (old car and they were all a bit rotten). I'd blow a hose, duct tape it together, refill the system, then blow the next weaker one. Over a couple of hours I lost all but one. This was pre-internet, so expensive trip to the dealer that day. It was my first Audi, the bottle was old and discolored, and I hadn't seen the maximum fill line on it. I can think of a lot of things that will make a cooling system lazy, but your damaged tank makes me think that maybe you are dealing with a system that is going over pressure. So, just a guess, and good luck with it.

Thanks for the input , i fill the coolant bottle to just above the min line , according to the manual because when the engine is running it will rise to around the max line , i hear you about the pipes its just so difficult to see where it could be leaking as everything is so close together , i actually had the whole motor redone, the pipes are supposed to be new , but since the motor was redone ive just had one weird problem after the other , i even had my cam sprocket shear in half have you ever heard of that!
