cruising speeds and boost part II
 

so from my first post, its determined when at crusising speeds (ex 80-85), the system is in vacuum (around 10 psi according to one poster)

few question baed on that

1) thatt would mean the system wouldn't be pushing out boost at any given cruising speed (say starting at 50mph or up) ?

2) i've seen a few times people say just because it isn't making boost, the turbo is still spooling rather fast, but just not being worked nearly as hard as when it makes boost. so if I'm driving down the highway for 2 hrs, cruise control at 80mph, and i come to a rest stop, if I look at my turbo, could it be red hot?

what i'm trying to get an idea of is how stressed the turbo is given average medium/long distance driving conditions of sustained speeds with little acceleration.

Boost is a function of throttle, not RPM...
 

A few things. First of all, when the system is in vacuum, as you say, it is not pushing any PSI, it is measured in inches mercury. I have a boost gauge and while cruising the car is generally at around 10-12 in Hg, unless it's climbing a steep hill or something, then sometimes boost comes into play.

Your car can push boost at about any speed, it all depends on throttle: how hard you push the pedal, or in this case, how hard the cruise control code has decided it has to work. I'm pretty certain your turbo would never glow red if it weren't pushing boost, yes it would be working but never enough to heat it up that bad.
