Default Custom Intake

i have a 98.5 1.8T, i am working on making my own custom cold air intake. i see alot of ppl that have a4's, put the filter in the lower ritght passenger grill. but i was thinking about putting it in the lower left grill rite in front of the intercooler. this will allow for a shorter amount of tubing to be used. also can i go directly to the engine intake since its a cold air?...or do i still have to go through the intercooler. i am also puzzled on what size tubing to use, 2.5 inch or 3.0 inch. 2.5 is better for smaller engines, but the 1.8 is turbo...any help or comments would be appreciated

Default it would actualy be more tubing

the reason the intake's on the passenger side is because the turbo's right there. if you try to mount ur intake on the driver side...ur probably gonna run into some issues with fitting the actual filter in there along with making sure the piping doesn't run into anything. in my personal opinion...the filter placement is just fine as is...u just gotta shield it from the engine compartment.

Default You do not want to put it in front of the intercooler...

The intercooler needs that shot of cool air to lower the intake temps. Plus if you drive by a low line flood, it will suck up the water and guess where it goes: the motor! You do not want to replace your motor at that point. As for tubing size, it has to be at or larger than the diameter of the MAF sensor which is ~65mm.
