Get 7 quarts 1 for topping. If you are sick of adding oil, get some Syntec 0w-30, 5w-40 or 5w-50....
My consumption is non-existant over dino or 5w-40 Synpower. Syntec 0w-30 (red label) is made in Germany, only available at AutoZone, and is like no other oil. It's green crawls out of the bottle and smells like Gummy Bears. 5w-40 is available at the dealer(TDI oil) made in Belgium, has the VW specs on the front, I use it in summer, very good. Syntec 5w-50 is much over-looked. I know Team PTG uses it in their M3, my Bosch mechanic uses it by the barrel. I know a few people who have used it at 10,000 mile change intervals and their engine is REALLY clean. My best tip is forget counting miles for a change, use the calender. 6 month intervals is awesome for most drivers. Let me know if you want any specific advice. PS grip tape on the filter makes it turn easier.

2.8 30V AHA engine oil change
See the link below for correct oil capacity, 6.3 quarts with filter change. Note that the correct oil capacity for model year 2000 and 2001 AHA motors was changed to 6.0 quarts with filter change, causing some confusion among 2.8 owners
The oil drain plug takes a 19mm socket or wrench.
The correct oil drain plug torque is 22 ft. lbs.
Use a BIG oil drain pan. The drain is mounted on the side of the oil pan, and when you pull the plug oil shoots quite a distance. So, to avoid an incredible mess, use a big pan, and position it with one edge, not the center, under the oil drain plug.
Be careful not to overtighten the oil filter. Scratch the paint on the filter body to form a reference point and don't tighten the filter over 3/4 turn after you first feel the gasket contact the filter mounting surface. The Bently manual says 15 ft.lbs., I think the side of the OEM filter says 14 ft. lbs, but I've never purchased a filter cap wrench that will fit the Audi filter. At any rate, we aren't talking a lot of force here, and you'll pay dearly at your next oil change if you go into Tarzan mode when installing the filter.
Any good oil that meets the standards shown in your owner's manual will do. Don't make the mistake of thinking heavier oil (40wt and up) will provide more protection for your motor. You'll just throw away a couple of horse power pumping thicker oil. Audi engineers no doubt put a lot of thought into the recommendations in your owner's manual, so why ignore them? I live in Texas and use Mobil 1 5W-30 and I have absolutely no concern that my engine will seize when I'm doing 80mph on I35 on a 110 degree day with my AC on (of course). My oil temp gauge never makes it to straight up and down (250 degrees) unless I'm sitting in gridlock traffic on such a day.
I use Mobil 1 only because it makes me feel better about using such a light oil, and about observing the extended oil change intervals that Audi (and all other auto mfrs) recommend these days. I'm not sure my Audi's engine would know the diffence if I used Pennzoil or Castrol or any other quality non-synthetic multigrade.

http://steve-hall.com/audi-tsb/tsb/a009902.pdf</a

Oil and Filter type
I just bought a 1999 A4 Quattro 2.8 (firs time Audi owner) and i'm trying to figure out which oil type i can purchase at Autozone (filter too of course). Audi Parts - Vw Parts - Audi Parts Vw Parts Kit Company - BlaupartsĀ® says / suggests: 5w30 A4 30V. I'm not exactly sure what 30V means BUT can't I just buy any 5w30 semi-synthetic (or full) oil from Auto Zone? The 5 Gal oil from blauparfts is $55.84. Auto Zone sells 5w30 Synthetic for about $30. The filter Auto Zone lists is STP Part #: S8994 @ $5.99 OR Bosch Part #: 3441 @ $13.99.
I live in Raleigh/Durham area of NC. Please advice.
I'd appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
John
