Do you guys regret lowering/stiffer suspension in Houston?(or other potholed cities)
I'm beginning to feel that way. My car is not the same way since i've lowered it. I can hear a bit of squeaks and rattle and the suspension is a bit jarring (I had OEM sport but no bilsteins w/ OEM springs). I got rid of my previous car b/c of squeaks and rattles and this drives me nutz (yeah and i'm a bit **** when it comes to noises). I sometime drive my brother's Maxima (stock) and its so relaxing and misses it (of course at corners i loooovvvee the a4 and on Highways). Anyhow, coming back to reality I had big plans for the ride and I dont know whether I should get rid of it early and go for something else (rode in 2000 328i and it was nice). Any non-biased suggestions.

You need to occasionally go find a nice twisty road to renew your faith........
Of course you sacrifice some comfort when you upgrade the suspension. Of course the car is going to become louder, any rattles and squeaks become more amplified.
And yes, if all you do is city driving, it can get on your nerves. But if all you do is city driving, why would you upgrade your suspension?
I live in Providence, RI, with many nasty roads. And I have the same supspension setup you do. Yes, occasionally it does feel a tad harsh.
But I also spend many a weekend in VT, on amazing twisty roads....holy crap does the car feel amazing on roads like this. So much better than stock. A totally different car. So worth the harshness on city roads. I also love how the suspension feels on the highway.
But I suppose if all I did was city driving, I probably wouldn't like the setup. It's a balance, with pros and cons. You can't expect the performance benefits without some drawbacks in comfort, rattles, etc.....but you must have known that before you upgraded, right? =)

sometimes I do... BUT
I am usually over that when I get to bomb some nice road, it is SO worth it then...
but seriously... you are talking to a person who's glove box is sitting in my house because it was rattling...
try to nail some of the bigger rattles down, I have had success with that method...
and drive more fun roads!
I also am in the process of upping the stereo, I find that helps...
so overall, I am occasionally annoyed, but I REALLY am happy overall.

All and all I've been pretty happy considering...
I live in Boston and if anyone has driven around Boston lately you know what I mean, probably the worst roads anywhere unless you count dirt roads and dirt bike trails. Unlike like you I had OEM non-sport it it really felt like I was driving a 4x4. I decided to go with H&Rs and Bilstiens and so far hardly any squeking or other annoying noises. My control arms were rattling like hell and Audi replaced those and everything sounds tight now. What's really worth it is driving north everyday on the highway. I just love those on/off ramps. The only person who seems to complain about the suspension my GF because she says it hurts her ***** when I go over bumps. Sorry...

thats what i'm talking about. passengers think either i have dead shocks or something wrong...
Also what if i swap em out w/ progressive coilovers or something? I know they're a bit expensive but if that gives you handling WITH ride quality over my current setup i'll do it. Thanks.

I live around Boston too and I'm scared $hitless to lower my ride...
A friend with a 98 GTI VR6 put some H&R springs & shocks on and it became almost unbearable.
Until I move elsewhere (or far enough away from the city) I wont consider it, no matter how much better it'll look.

That's very strange......
I always get comments about how the car handles great but isn't too stiff....just right for an everyday driver. Never heard any passengers complain about the ride being too harsh (and yes I've had many passengers).

or perhaps a stiffer ride ain't for you.......it's not for everyone......
as I said, you definitely make some sacrifices in comfort to achieve the better handling.
Whether it's worth it or not is totally subjective. It's in the butt of the beholder =P
Heck, I've heard people complain about the sport package being too harsh!
So maybe it's not for you. That's ok. Sometimes you need to go too far to find out how much is just right.
But before you decide to change your setup or anything, I again urge you to go find some nice twisty back roads. It might make you change your mind.

I have been in a early 90s Corvette w/ z sport suspension(?) and it was jaw...
breaking harsh. I didnt think the setup is that bad but still bad enough on slightly bumpy roads (and its soooo sensitive to every little road bump). I looooovvveee the look b/c I have 17x8s w/235/40/17s. Then I got to ride in my friend's 2000 328i and its not mushy (like my brother's Maxima) but still taut/firm. Will i get that if I get progressive coilovers? arent they tunable to amount of firmness u want?
