Does anyone know the actual functional life of the stock sport suspension shock/spring setup?
The guys at the local tuner shop said they're pretty much gone by 30k...are they right?
|
Depends on how you drive, what you drive on etc...but 30k seems wrong.
|
depends on a few things....
location location location...
your shocks and springs will only last as long as the streets are completely smooth... other than that they are at their mercy. |
I have 40k on mine and they are fine, I just took them out, and they were in perfect condition
|
As a rule? No they are wrong. It IS possible to wear out a set of OEMs in 30k but you'd have to be
driving NYC streets for that 30k. What type of roads do you drive on?
|
what's wrong with NYC streets?
|
Compared to the roads I drive out here they are rougher than a cob.
There's a reason all them yellows have no suspensions under em :)
|
and where do you live at?
|
60 Miles North of Seattle. I moved here from Vermont.
|
43k on mine, no problems
|
Oh come on.. I grew up there.. all of manhattan is pothole hell..
1st, 2nd, 3rd, all the avenue are hell.. But go out of the city it's a lot better..
When I lived in nyc I would wear out my brakes on my minivan in 14k :) And the suspension what suspension :P Gotta to love the bumper to bumper traffic. jaime |
Yippers let me ask you.. So how long are coilovers good for?
When would I have to re-valve them?
I have about 35k on them now? butter smooth road unless I go to memphis. jaime |
WAG .. I wouldn't worry till 60 or so .. unless you start to feel em 'loosen'. Who are you running?
|
You're not going to get any hard numbers...too many variables. Here's an estimate, based on past
experience with other cars.
All is well until 50K Around 75K, it just doesn't ride like new at all...but it's still very good. Around 100K, shocks won't be blown, but it'll ride like a caddy. Somewhere thereafter, shocks will blow out and you'll have to replace them. |
I have h&r coilovers. I don't feel them loosen them up. Just wondering.
I have never changed out a suspension from wearing out on a car before. I never keep them long enough. But my audi, it's a keeper.
I'm trying to plan out my maintence plan. Of things to fix, as they wear out. thanks for the input. jaime |
NP ... I'll call H&R when I get a chance and ask for input. They're in my home town.
|
Wow.. cool.. thanks mark...
|
you'de only hit plenty of potholes when your lookin at girls...
trust me i know this for sure =P
|
That's funny you mention that.. because you remember all the potholes..
I would drive over the queensboro bridge everyday at rush hour. I had all the potholes memorized. But yah looking at those girls I hit them big potholes. lol

Do shocks "go" first, or you need to replace both shocks/springs at the same time?
|
Shocks go well before springs.
|
Serious?? when did this happen? I love it up there!
|
well, i guess i'll just wait to change out the suspension then...*sigh*
I'm in SoCal, but came from the streets of Chicago... I guess the suspension feels fine- i was just looking for a reason to upgrade, that's all...Thanks for all the input, everyone!
|
Hell man you should have stated that in the original post. We can give you many reasons to upgrade.
Better handling, better looks, poverty likes company .... your car will look awful with 17s or 18s and the OEM sport .. need more? :)
|
It is beautiful country. I moved out here in 1974 .. but family is still back in VT. I just got back
from a visit back home. VT is nice country too but way to easy to starve to death back there.
BTW .. I've heard all the 'whoa dude, you are older than dirt' lines :) |
1974!!!! whoa dude.................ah never mind 8-)
the thing that gets me about up there, is how late the sun goes down in summer! go up into Canada and it can set after 10 at night!
|
lol ... yep .. but the converse is true in winter. It is dark when I drive into work and dark when I
drive home.
|
Stop it with the SCARY vampire stuff!!! 8-)
