Default don't wax clearcoat?

stopped into a local auto paint store to pick up some quality carnauba for my new santorin blue 2.8. all three guys there insisted i shouldn't wax a clear coated paint - they recommended a polymer glaze, saying that wax clouds clear coat, and that the polymer would allow the paint to "breathe." this product is not a synthetic wax. first i'd heard of this, and i've been doing some reading lately . . . any thoughts?

Default Everyone who thinks waxing is making their car's finish "cloudy", raise your hand.

Not mine! I'm not questioning whether this polymer product that was recommended will give good results -- I don't know if it will or if it won't -- but I do know for certain that waxing does not "cloud" the finish on either of my clearcoated Audis.
Rick

Default Yeah right. I wax my car twice a month and it looks great....

...don't listen to that load of crap. First of all, paint is not like leather and does not have to "breathe". People like to talk out of their *** sometimes. Audi clearcoats should be glazed 1-4 times a year and waxed as often as needed with a silicone-free, cleaner-free, pure carnuba wax. Check out CareCareOnline for more info on glazing, waxing, and just about any topic on car care.

The direct result of expert marketing is that a lot of people have been convinced that there is some magic associated with clearcoat finishes that require newer technology (read more costly) protection.

The ONLY thing that is different is you should not use protectants with polish compounds (of course you should never have used them on non-clearcoat paint either but people are lazy). Polishing should be reserved for times when scratches need to be removed. You are not removing oxidized paint pigment because of clearcoat so unless you have a problem, pure wax is the way to go.

Wax can get "cloudy". That happens when you dont ever wash the car (rubbing of a little wax each time) and the wax breaks down. Then it is time to remove it and wax again. Personally I have never had wax go cloudy - I guess I wash my cars too much.
