Driveshaft cv joints.

One of the A4's I work on has a vibration, under load only, feels like the rear of the driveshaft. On a very very cold day pulling it in the shop I heard what I would have called u joint noise if onloy it had u-joints.

Anyone have a shaft? Are the cv joints servicable?

ETKA does not break out a seperate part....

they are replaceable

thats about it.

some places can service them/ rebuild them.

Joey T 01-26-2005 05:33 PM

Hmm. Can my local dealer find part numbers?

Doubt it.

Any chance you can help?

Puhhhhleeeeze?

:)

from a vin number the required part number can be established.

or you can just hit up europartsdirect.com and see what they charge for a new CV joint... Unless the axle is bent its not worth replacing the whole axle. Granted I'm me and I only paid like $89 for a CV joint kit made by Lobro (oem)... I'm sure you can get a decent price on europartsdirect.

Danke.

Local dealer is the suck in the parts department.

How about the center support bearing? Is is replaceable/serviceable?

qfrog Ti20 01-26-2005 06:42 PM

whoah.... you mean the prop shaft?

I dont think that center carrier bearing is available separately.

I do remember reading someplace that somebody had replaced one on a quattro... not sure what model tho.

qfrog Ti20 01-26-2005 06:48 PM

the Axles are considered "driveshafts" the front to rear one is called the "propshaft"

very rarely does a prop shaft fail.

I thought you were talking about the CV joints on the axles. Sorry for the confusion.

I think I meant the prop shaft bearing.

Sorry about the poor wording.
Not sure what it's called, but its the center drive shaft that runs front to back. There is a bearing/carrier under the heat shield. The 97 has a carbon fiber drive shaft (or prop shaft) and if the bearing is going bad its gonna be expensive.

I'd find a 2nd hand shaft from a salvage yard

a pick it up part... but still probably dirt cheap vs buying a new CF prop shaft.
