Default Drivetrain problems, part two.

If you read my earlier post, I am suffering from a creaking/clicking noise when I put a significant ammount of torque on my drivetrain. Today I got the car up on jack stands and examined the drivetrain in the front.

Results:

The drivers side CV boot is torn, but there is only a tiny bit of play (like 1mm) in the axle if I pull in/push out. There is no play front to back or up and down. I checked the two transmission mounts up front, and they seemed fine.

But when I turned the front axles by hand and put torque on the driveshaft that goes to the rear of the car, I heard a clinking coming from the very center of the car. Right behind the post cat oxygen sensors and just underneath the heat shield that runs down the length of the car in the middle, there is some sort of joint in the driveshaft. I couldn't see it well, but there was a loose metal noise coming from that joint. I have a feeling this is what is causing the clicking under moderate torque and the creaking like an old floorboard under higher torque.

I thought the noise could be coming from the CV, but there is relatively little noise coming while turning compared to under heavy acceleration.

What is this joint, and how much of a PITA is it to replace?

Default yup. center prop shaft bearing

mine went bad. regreased it, only for it to go bad soon after.

Bearing cost something like $150 from blauparts

or you can keep your eye open for a used prop shaft

mine has been bad for quite a while(like 8 months i think) got to get it fixed soon.

hope you have a lift

http://www.blauparts.com/</a

Default Are you sure?

The joint that was creaking was the first joint coming out of the transmission. The shaft got really narrow right as it went under the heat shield past the O2 sensors. Then it got larger again. The clinking was coming from the end of the shaft right where it got larger again. Perhaps tomorrow I will take a picture, but it didn't look like a bearing that it was coming from. It is my understanding that the Quattro AWD system has two CV joints on the center shaft. Could it possibly be one of these CV joints?

Default No im not sure, im no mechanic

a "loose metal noise" can be a number of things
heat shield hiting shaft
loose bracket
ect

did you get any vibration when accelerating at low speeds?

my guess is one of the joint's is dry.

Default There is slight vibration at high torques...especially in second gear.

That's where the creaking sound also comes into play. The clicking sound I am getting is more consistent, and can be heard with less torque on the drivetrain.

All sounds stop when there is no torque on the drivetrain (e.g coasting in neutral, braking, engine revving in neutral).

I might just have to drop the exhaust tomorrow and figure this out.

Default UPDATE

I was under the car today and there was definitely slack in the propeller shaft. My guess is that it's time for a complete rebuild.

Default by rebuild you mean a good used one right?

IMO it would be a waste of time and $ to rebuild it.

Default Rebuilt propeller shaft from Raxles.com is $249

And it comes with a lifetime warranty. I doubt a used one is going to be much more value, especially when you consider the warranty.

At that price, the real PITA is going to be getting the rusty exhaust clamp bolts loose.
