ECM need replacement?
Yesterday afternoon the wife came home with her 2001 A4 2.8l running very rough. It was our first warm day and she was using the A/C for first time this year.
The CEL was not on.I turned off the A/C and it started to run better.I shut off the engine and then started it again, the CEL came on.
I checked the codes and I had P0304 (misfire in number 4).
And P0605 (ECM ROM error).
The spark plug was loose and that seemed to fix that. But today after many test drives and checking the codes I am still getting the P0605 error.
It runs fine until you turn the A/C way down and then I get the P0605 code.
Is the ECM toast or is there another explanation that would be easier on my wallet??

If you can't handle a used $200 ECU, then I'd be worried.
Also, don't use a generic scanner, it makes us cry. Get a VAG-COM and pull the real VW codes so we can better help.

Do you ever leave the computer?
Any ways it is what it is.I don't have a VAG-COM and the generic reader is somewhat useful.I will never buy a Windows based product.Windows is a virus!!So cry if you must.
The problem as it turns out was a bad plug wire.Which fixed me right up.
No more ROM error codes.A/C works perfect.
Thanks.

Well good, glad you got it fixed.
You know, I'm a mac user myself and a computer tech who lives in both worlds. If you can't get off your high horse to run windows, and you own an Audi, I have little pity. The diag software, repair manual, and parts program all require Windows.
You're the kind of person who gives other Mac users the bad, snooty reputation. I run a second generation T7600 MBP, a second gen iPod Nano, and that's all the Apple hardware I own.
Also, in re to my posting habits; You were never here during the heyday of AW when this forum was actually alive. My posting averages are actually very low compared to other users.

when i had a macbook i used parallels, 311-2, and an ebay usb vag cable. worked perfect. though i will say ive read in the vagcom forum on vortex that parallels may not be the best choice if you are running a legit usb ross-tech cable. what is the other alternative, wine? i think thats linux though. i cant remember off the top of my head what the other windows emu is.

No, VMware works the best. Proven software in the enterprise and server world. Beta 904 with their hardware works perfectly.
Also, the 904 software is light years ahead of the 311.2 release. It's worth the investment to upgrade.

The next thing you can do for future reference, is go test drive a used audi of the same type of yours, and swap the ECU to make sure that is the problem. DONT STEAL IT THOUGH GEEZ.
