Electrical Problem: Turn on headlights and the wipers and turn signals quit working
Re: 98 A4 Avant 2.8
Yesterday when I started the car the battery light stayed on for a few minutes before going out.
Today, I started the car, no battery light but when I turned on the headlights the wipers and turn signals quit working. I wiggled around the fuses, checked the battery with a hydrometer (it shows full charge in all cells) started up the car and everything worked until I turned on the headlights, then the wipers and signals quit. My next step is to get the alternator output checked but can't do that till this afternoon. Any BTDT info would be helpful in the meantime.

The combo switch is for headlights/turn signal & cruse. My windshield wipers also do not work which is a seperate switch. Just checked the horn ....doesn't work. Must have something to do with the power supply to the steering wheel.

The load reduction relay is under the dash above your clutch foot with a big #213 on it. Part #443 951 253 J, But the problem could be the ignition switch. Pull the relay put 12V across the two small spades and listen for a click, you can check the two large spades with a ohm meter at the same time. If it clicks and you have continuity when energized then the realy is good and it's probably the ignition switch. Check for 12V on the small spade slot (#8) when your key is 'on', if you have 0 (or ~9v as in my case) it's time for a new ignition switch. I've got one in my hand, time to remove the air bag and steering wheel and check it out.
