Default Is empty gas tank = permamet Engine Check Light???

I menaged to run out of gas today. After taking a short walk to the nearest gas station, barrowing one gallon gas container, filling it up with gas I was able to come back to my car, fill it up with some gas, and starting in back up. The car runs fine now, unfortunately the Engine Check light is on. Will it reset itself? If yes, how long should I wait? Will I have to visit dealership to get it reset?
Thanks,
Chris K.
96 2.8QM
I've had the check engine light come on 2 or 3 times in the year I've had the car. Just recently I decided to pay attention to how long it took to reset itself.
I believe that on the 6th successful engine start (ie. no more fault codes) after the incident that made it go on, the light will go off as usual after the car has started.
98TQMS
