Engine Noise

Hi, I am currently have some problems with my A4 2.8 automatic. It is from late 98. I am noticing a strange noise coming from the engine when I am accelerating from a stop. The noise goes away after I go over 10mph. The best way I can describe the sound is that it sounds like a belt is scraping against something. When I am at a stop light, the noise comes back and it varies from loud to barely noticeable. Has anyone else had this problem? Please let me know. Thanks...

descrip the noise pls.. can you explain or try to describ any smell also

The noise almost sounds like it is having problems getting out of first gear or something. Kind of like a reving sound but not really. I have also been noticing a burning smell coming from the engine after driving. Thanks for any help you can give me...
