Default Erratic Coolant temp behavior...

The temp gauge on my IC seems to sit way lower than it actually should sit at. After a 12 mile ride to work it had hardly moved. There are times when it sits at normal (middle) or just below it (most of the time). So I can't be sure if it's the sensor or a stuck termostat. (This started happening right after I had the waterpump changed at the dealership.) Any ideas?

Default I say you go buy the $6 sensor and reaplace it yourself.

quick cheap way to figure it out.

Default If you want to check the resistance of a sensor I think some values are 30C = 1500-2000 ohms

and 80C = 275-375 ohms

Default If the temp really bounces around probably the sensor...

If it only warms up when you are in traffic and drops on the freeway could be the thermostat.

I hope not, but it's quite likely from what I can remember.

Default Do you know where to get the $6 sensor? A sensor from the dealership will cost me $25. I found

some online... I'll go and try the local parts stores.

Default I have CPO and also have other stuff that needs to be fixed under the CPO.

This makes me think about making the appointment and the trip to the dealership. They might have screwed the thermostat, when they did the water pump.
How hard is it to change the thermostat?

Default On my V6 the thermostat failed 4 weeks after doing the water pump and timing belt.

Started to stick open.OEM Tsats do that, aftermarket ones stick shut,(definitely not so good).

After two experiences with this I would replace a Tstat any time the timing belt or water pump is worked on.Maybe the higher pump pressure from a new impeller causes them to fail.

Its a real PITA on the V6 but someone else will chime in about the 1.8T.
