First 5K mile service today (after 5 weeks and 3 days of ownership)...
I was pressed for time and desperate for my first service without an appointment since I'm going on a long road trip to the bay area this coming weekend. The only way they would do my car is if a VW tech did it -- I know... why would I let a VW tech work on my S4?? Well, I was desperate!
Anyhow, it turned out to be the best and fastest service experience I've had from any dealer! I checked the oil and they didn't overfill and my car was not washed as per my instructions. They even actually rotated the tires - I checked (past experience: say they did but didn't). And considering I walked in on a busy day at 11 am... I was outta there by noon! Wow!
So what did I do during my short wait?
Test drive cars of course!
I've test-driven pretty much every permutation of every Audi model available... so today, I hopped into a black GTI VR6. What a fun car! Nothing like my Audi but it was still a blast to drive. One big observation -- the spring on the clutch is sooo light. Just like all recent VW's I've driven, the clutch spring is easy on the leg... only very light effort on is necessary to put-in and let-out the clutch, making it very easy to drive smoothly. On the contrary, my S4's clutch spring is heavy -- requires lots of leg effort by comparison and makes clucthwork a bit more cumbersome. What's the reason for this??? Is it an Audi thing... anyone? I doubt this has anything to do with having more torque... does it?
I'm not really complaining, I love working my S4's clutch This is just an observation.<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=5628"><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/larryvsig4.jpg" border="0"></a>

Actually the bit heavy clutch is a quattro thing, 2wd audis like mine are lighter than japanese cars

My M3 clutch is WAY stiffer than my A4...has nothing to do with quattro IMO.

Re: First 5K mile service today (after 5 weeks and 3 days of ownership)...
Your S4 has a wee bit more HP and the torque curve peaks earlier and harder than any stock VW that I know of. This means the car needs more clamping force on the clutch which usually makes the pedal harder to push. Unless the car has a power assited clutch.

yup miramar... the only people that would take me on short notice w/o an appointment.
All audi techs except for one was out for the day... so it was either wait 5 hours for the audi tech or let a VW tech do it right away. He probably did a better job because not working on Audis regularly, he probably ended up servicing it literally "by the book"<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=5628"><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/larryvsig4.jpg" border="0"></a>
