Default First post, first question

First let me say hi, and I'm glad I found you guys.

I have a 97 A4 1.8 Turbo Quattro. It has absolutely no low end power off the line. I have had it for three years and just thought that is how the vehicle was supposed to be...a dog off the line...

I took it to a buddy and had him put upper control arms on it, he took it for a test drive after he was done with. He asked if it had always been that frickin slow or is that something new. I told him it was like that as long as I have ever had it. He agreed that it was definitely a safety issue if you have to pull out in traffic.

So it got me thinking and researching about it.

I have seen a few threads about the wastgate valve, or possibly hoses, or possibly a bypass valve. All great ideas...problem is, I have no idea what this means, where they are, how to check them, etc. basically don't know anything about it.

I am looking for some direction on this, maybe some instruction on how to check these, or maybe be pointed in a direction of some good threads, or manuals on where to get started checking this stuff or any other ideas or thoughts.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I am lost here.

Thanks kindly for any and all help

Generally you will probably get a check engine light if there is a problem. Not always however. You should put a gauge on it and check boost.

A stock 1.8T is only 150 hp and weighs about 3000 lb. If you have the old style 5 speed auto (not tiptronic) it just isn't very quick.

You can chip it for $400 and that makes a huge difference.

The best manual is the factory "Bentley publishing" and costs about $80.

I'd start by checking if the wastegate lever is loose, which would cause the boost to be low. Do you have a rattling sound at low rpm or when decellerating? Our Passat had low power and made this noise, which I figured incorrectly was the timing chain. It's kind of difficult to reach, but search for this, as I did post pictures some time ago of the turbo and wastegate adjustment nuts. As Audimick said, a boost gauge would give you the truth about the manifold pressure, and the general health of the turbo system. The short rubber hose to the fuel pressure regulator is a convenient place to install a "T" fitting for the gauge. It's the small stainless steel can on the stainless steel fuel piping.

It sounds like you need some basic info, so if the Bentley is out of your budget, at least get the Chilton Passat/A4 manual (70700) which has the benefit of many photos.

Thanks for that info turbo, no rattling she is still pretty quiet.

I am bringing it to a mechanic on Thursday so he can take a look at it.

I guess I was hoping to be pointed in a direction with some pics and instructions of what needed to be done. I am mechanically inclined, I just need a little direction.

Thanks so much
