flywheel hitting block and cover
 

I've had this clicking noise that comes and goes for about the last week. I thought it had something to do with the clutch as it only occured when I had the clutch pedal pressed. so my brother and I pulled out the tranny, clutch, and flywheel. This is what we found:

We think that there is possibly something wrong with the crankshaft bearings allowing the crankshaft to slide leading to the flywheel hitting the shield and seal housing on the crankshaft. Or, could something be wrong with the flywheel? ANY ideas or help would be great!

nope, nothing like that at all. I just pushed in the clutch one day and it started making this ticking sound....I think it may be the thrust bearings. Just looking for any other info thanks guys!

2nd, you crank has "walked" forward. re-build time.

only 100k miles on the car. oh well
 

Is a rebuilding the bottom end better then say going for a used short block?

That's an aweful lot for the crankshaft to move. I think your flywheel is coming apart.
 

Pull the timing belt and see how far you can push the crank in and out. If it moves at all I would be surprised. I cant image a scenario where the thrust bearing would fail.

BTW, the service limit on crankshaft endplay is .3mm. More than that and the crankshaft has to be replaced.

i have the samy symptoms of what you all are talking about. after i had my clutch replaced last summmer(i had a Sachs sport clutch and pressure plate put in and reused the stock flywheel), sometimes i have a ticking noise when the clutch pedal is down. what i've noticed is that it only happens when it's warmer our (didn't hear it at all this winter) and only after being in a lot of stop and go traffic.
does this sound like the same thign as you guys are talking about? when the shop did my clutch work, could they have done something to cause the crank to move? i didn't have this issue until right after the clutch install was done.

i was under the impression that this issue would lead to a worst-case of having to replace the clutch/flywheel again. but, you guys are making it sound like an engine rebuild might be necessary?

i'm not very learned on the subject, so excuse my ignorance, please. but, reading this thread got me more concerned about my issue... i had been living with it because i hadn't heard it all winter, but am starting to hear it again. also, i had been under the impression that the worst case was my clutch would go and i'd have to replace it...

I just bolted a crankshaft into a block yesterday. The more I think about this..
 

the less I think it is bearings. Even without the bearings, I don't thing the crnakshaft has enough room to move that much. If it did, things would be banging around inside the block like mad.

It has to be flywheel related. I have a stock flywheel in my garage. I'll take a look at it tomorrow and see if I can break it.

for me, the flywheel being the issue would make more sense since i've reused my original flywheel. i've been willing to live with the occasional ticking noise because i've figured that what it would cost to get it identified/fixed would probably equate to just replacing the clutch/flywheel again and i figured i wasn't doing any damage beyond that.
but, it sure is annoying when it happens...

I was laying under the car and I was able to just slide the crankshaft way more then .3mm more like 2-3mm. so i'll probably be on the market for a long block. stellar.
