Default Fuel Filter, P0441, P0455, Etc

Hi. My '99 2.8 is throwing codes for the Evap and purge valve. It is accelerating erratically during steady pedaling, sometimes stalls after refuel, the gas gauge will sometimes just sporadically drop to empty and then jump back up or stay down with the light on, and does have a hole somewhere in the exhaust.

This started after I ran out of gas (oops!) and then the CEL appeared. I pulled the Purge Valve and cleaned it. No change. Although I see that some folks say to take it apart?

The hoses coming out of the canister appear fine, no cracks, holes, etc.

It is time for a new fuel filter. I do not have the radio code and Audi will charge to get me a code. According to the Haynes manual, I need to disconnect the battery to do this work. I've been told I don't have to disconnect by a friend. Any suggestions?

If the filter change doesn't help, I'm assuming it's the canister. I'm changing the filter as I wonder if maybe when I ran out then refueled, all the junk in the bottom of the tank plugged up the filter a bit.

Getting under her today for an oil change and to get a look at the pipes- she grumbles like an angry old woman without her morning coffee.

I like that terminology; "stead pedaling"

The purge valve sure would be the likely trouble spot regarding the stalling after refueling. If after cleaning there was no improvement, you may need to get another.

Without the radio code, you would need to attach a small 12 volt battery to maintain voltage while the main battery is disconnected, and these often just plug into the cigarette lighter. Actually, the only reason I can think of to disconnect your battery is so no one turns on the fuel pump while hoses are disconnected.

Your fuel pump already has a screen to keep debris from being drawn in, so I don't think you absolutely need to change the filter.
