FYI for all who use lifetime air filters like K&N
 

A couple months back I did some free air box mods, like cut a 3" hole in the lower front air box, remove the large and small screen from the venture in front of the MAF and cut the MAF pre snorkle shorter. At the same time I cleaned and oiled the K&N filter. At first all was cool but gradually the car developed what felt like a boost loss or timing retard between 2 and 3K rpms. First I thought BPV failed since I have 95K miles ont he car. So I bought a Forge but no change. The problem was at its worst when the car was cold. I didn't get any DTC faults from the VAG tool. The milage was down and I was getting frustrated, these mods are supposed to help not cause problems. I was stumped when I finally put it all together. The freshly and probably over oiled K&N filter was re-depositing the oil onto the hot wire in the MAF. I cleaned the hot wire with some carb cleaner and wala it runs great again. I still need to find out if milage has improved and I whant to hook up the VAG and take some more data and compare to the MAF readings from when it was dirty but the seat of the pants is sure happy. So when Cleaning those filter be carefull on the oil amount that you spray on.
