I got my oil changed recently and the mechanic came over and showed me this black gunk on the oil cap. He said that with synthetic oil it will go away over about 3 or 4 oil changes. Thats ok, but is there anything I can do to clean that out quicker?

Some people have used AutoRX others have used Seafoam
Be carefull. Engine treatments can eat away at seals and gaskets so you could end up with an oil leak if you use something too abrasive. Also a lose impediment will burn off and go out with the exhaust. In a NA engine this is no problem. If you drive a turbo charged car, the impediment could rip a hole right through the hot wheel.

seafoam is pretty neat
my gas mileage went up after I used it on the oil. I thought that was pretty crazy.
The can tells you how much to use per quart of oil you have. Just pour it in, run the engine on idle for a bit (oil goes to nominal temp, 20 minutes, whatever...) and then change the oil.

Seafoam works different than AutoRX. AutoRX is just an oil treatment. You change the oil, add the treatment, then drive 1500 miles and then change the oil again.
Seafoam is a cleaner that can be put in the itake, or added to the gasoline and so on. I dont know much about Seafoam, but AutoRx seems safe.
The AutoRX website has info. I have never looked for a Seafoam website.
