Default Help !!! '98 A4 with engine problem

I got a 1998 A4 1.8 Automatic with 60,000 miles. I last got a tune up at about 58,500 miles.

below is the problem.......

I first noticed a problem with my engine when trying to accelerate onto a highway from a dead stop. I would get onto the highway with no problem but then at about 40 mph or so I could feel the engine "falling out" a bit. When I looked down at the tachometer I can see the needle jumping up and down slightly.

I now also notice the problem when the car is in cruising mode. This can occur both on a highway and also on local streets where the speed limit is 35 - 40 mph. You can feel the engine racing for a second or two and then it falls down and then eventually back to normal. All of this happens over just a few seconds. A few times I even saw the "Drive" (Shown simply as "D") indicator light on the dashboard go on and off.

About 4 days ago I thought there might be a problem with my fuel injection so I went out and bought Prestone's Fuel Injector Cleaner. I added the the fluid to my gas tank but the problem hasn't gone away.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be ?

Thanks a lot.

Bill

Default Sounds like a tranny problem...

No check enine light?

It might be a sensor of some sort, maybe speed sensor. Is it your rpm tach jumping? Im not so sure but I think its definately trannsmission related.
