Default Help!! Advice needed on used A4 from Holtz Audi

I'm about 1,000 miles away, so it's hard for me to go and test drive the car in person. It's a 98 - equipped exactly like I want. The salesman tells me he knows the person that had the car and that they kept it meticulously clean.

I am hesitant, but on the verge of making an offer. He said something about the Audi Assured warranty (like there was a cost involved, but didn't explicitly state so). I thought all certified A4s automatically come with the warranty if it's bought from an Audi dealer. Can anyone confirm or correct?

Has anyone ever dealt with Holtz? Has anyone ever bought an Audi without seeing it in person? I'm looking for any kinds of experiences regarding this stuff. I love this car, but don't want to do anything too stupid. HELP!!!!!!

If I buy it, I'm flying out and driving it back to the heartland. Thanks in advance everybody!
KCH

Default I would never buy a car without first seeing and driving it...

of all people to believe in the world, why start with a car salesmen (no disrespect intended). unless it is an amazing deal from some auction site, i think it is very risky and most others will agree with me.

Default Re: methodman is right

I have bought a car (Jeep) once 1,500 miles away in Utah, back when they did not make V8's in California anymore. It was new though, and as methodman points out I still checked it out and drove it before buying it. Going that far for a used car definately puts you on the spot, and the dealer knows it. You definately better have the price nailed down, not to mention clarifying any questions regarding extra costs and the warranty the car has. Also is the warranty going to cover you when you get it home or do you have to take it back to him to have it honored? Don't take his word for it ask your local dealer if they will honor it.

You should also get the VIN and do a check on it. I can not remember how this is done, but there is a WWW site that you can go to and find out if the car has been involved in an insurance claim. Maybe somebody else here can give you that info.

Be Careful...

Default Holtz,... as in John Holtz?

2 things... I got my car from JH w/o ever test driving or seeing in person what Brilliant Yellow looks like. As for buying from Holtz... that an experience I would not want to try again. Don't get me wrong, they have a great service dept, but the sales team is, IMO, crap.

Default Stop!!!

After my experience at Mckenna Audi where the sales guy looked me in the eyes and LIED to me with a smile ....... I will never ever trust nobody.

Best advice I can give is to get a second opinion from an independent person (BMW mechanic or Audi club member) who does not have any relationship with the dealer.

Default Thanks for knocking some sense back into me!

This was the first one that I found that is exactly like I wanted. Unfortunately, I'm in Iowa near one dealer that gets a very small allocation of new (and virtually no used) A4s. By the way, it is John Holtz Audi.

There are too many potential things that could go wrong...not the least of which is my car breaking down somewhere in the middle of Indiana 'cause the salesman wasn't completely up-front.

Oh well. (Sigh)

Sooner or later. Thanks again everybody for the advice.
KCH

Default At a minimum have it checked out by an independent shop not affiliated...

with the dealer. Also go to www.carfax.com and run the VIN. Even so, I think I'd have to agree with most of the replies that it is a risky venture.
Jeff
