help! speedometer problem

so i keep having my speedometer cut out when ever it feels like it. mostly when i hit a large bump. i get a check engine light and code P0501 for vehicle speed sensor range/operation. at the same time this happens my gas gauge fluctuates. i'm almost certain it's not the speed sensor and i think it's a conection somewhere but i don't know what conectors to look for.

why wouldnt it be a speed sensor? sounds like it to me

but why would the gas gauge fluctuate when the speedo doesn't work?
