Help! Starter Problems.

I have a 97 A4 1.8T FWD. The other day I went to start the car and the starter is spinning, but it is not engaging to the flywheel. I'm assuming that there is a soleniod out? Anyone have this happen or a better guess.

My second question is does anyone have a microfiche picture of the starter? I haven't looked too hard, but I can't even find where the starter is out to take it off.

you are correct with your diagnosis

sounds like the solenoid isnt extending to engage the motor. Fairly common failure mode for starters

Thanks for your help, would you know of any resources on the net that could give me an idea of where the starter is located? I'm used to working on small block Chevy's and its always located on the back,left hand side of the block.

Non-Audi starter exploded view

Since your starter is spinning, I'm willing to bet it's not the solenoid. There's a throw-out bearing that engages the starter gear with your flywheel. Either that's out or your flywheel is missing some teeth.
