Strange LOUD rattle from engine compartment??
I have this loud rattle/knocking sound coming from the engine compartment area. It might even be coming from the transmission area. I have no clue what it is, but it makes the noise pretty much the whole time I drive, even at idle (just not as loud). The best way I can describe the noise is like a bolt is rolling around in the engine compartment (no that's not what it is though).
Some things I can only possible think of are engine mounts (but I doubt bad mounts are making that loud of a noise), loose clutch/flywheel (is that possible and would the car even work still?), loose transmission...
Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Lots of ideas.....but basically.....
if it's doing it constantly while the engine is on, I'd NOT RUN THE ENGINE until I found out what it was. It could very likely be your timing belt tensioner, and that can be very spendy if you drive on it.

Mat it's don with euro a4, (INDUKTION RULE HA HA!)
mat it's Don, i just did transmission fluid done couple days ago from you, hope you remember,
i am about to drop off my car to re-check my tranmsmission fluid level like you told me to.
i just have one more question,
i think you heard it when my car was in INDUKTION LAST time, my car making some hissing sound when i turn on the ignition, usually morning time
i will see you soon anyway
and always.. Thank you very much for your service,

might not be what you're talking about but...
my car would make this rattle like bolts clanging on metal but it would go away once warmed up. here was the culprit: <img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/48759/broken_clamp.jpg"> (not my pic)
the exhaust hanger's weld broke, could also be the weld under the hood.

no, i don't think that's it
I can hear it from the center vents, and I think it gets louder as my ear moves towards the shifter.
Also, fow all I know, the hood is aligned correctly.

hmm, didn't think about the tensioner.
Would the engine still work, even if the tensioner is failing? I don't feel any vibration or anything coming from the engine...basically just the noise. Is there any way to diagnose the timing belt without having to go in and change it anyway?

When the tensioner fails, it can make noise before it completely slips timing.....
so yea, it can be the tensioner and the engine will still run normal. I'd have it checked by someone reputable, it'll cost you an hour of labor at most. Well worth it.

Might also be the cam chain tensioner
In any case, a "bolt rolling around in the engine compartment" type of noise can be the precursor to a catastrophic failure in the engine. If it was my car, I'd TOW it to your mechanic/dealer and have it checked out. Audi engines cost a small fortune to replace.

I had a very loud noise like that, too.
It was the "camshaft tension adjuster" I could actually feel the vibration pulsating when I touched the top of the engine itself.
I took it to the dealership (i was still under warranty) and had the head mechanic look at it. I wanted him to tell me "Stop driving it" or come back in a week when we have time. He opted for the "stop driving it" option and fixed it the very next day.
I also had my the timing belt service done at that time, since they would have the engine 1/2 apart already. The timing belt service was not included under warranty, but I only had to pay $400 for the parts and labor. Parts came to like $250, so I didn't think $150 was bad for labor on that job.
