Help! Timing Belt!..help...help...help
My son got 1997 Audi A4. We are changing the timing belt. The dealer don't know which timing
belt he got. They told me there is one with something like 154 teeth and the other is 153 teeth.
Anybody knows which one I need?
Thanks

I had a mech. tell me ...
if you had the new style tensioner, it would require a longer belt. I don't know if this is true in your case. I know there are two articles in the tech section.

I replaced the timing belt myself this summer on 97 1.8T. The original belt is the one with fewer teeth (this is what I replaced). The belt with more teeth is for the replacement tensioner assembly. If you have the original timing belt, you can bet it will be the belt with fewer teeth. The replacement tensioner kit uses a wheel with a larger diameter and requires a timing belt with one more tooth to compensate. You can actually buy the newer timing belt and newer model tensioner as a kit from Audi for a very reasonable price. I would consider doing this, but make sure they have it in stock first. I replaced only the belt and the little guide pulley under the tensioner because thats all they had in stock at the time. (I would only buy Audi parts for this area of the car, don't take the risk of going with outside suppliers, it was only 85$can for genuine belt.)
Secondly, take the belt you remove to the dealer, the part number on the belt will indicate exactly what is needed. If you can not read the number, they will have both in stock, just physically compare the two parts, it will be obvious which one to use. You can always count the teeth as well.
