Many things work to spread the strut.

In a pinch, I've used an air hammer with a punch bit loaded in. Right in through the bottom, just enough to spread the strut. Has worked countless times with no damage to the steering knuckle for me.

Or you could wedge a cold chisel in there to spread it.

I've done it that way too.
