How clean does an accessory pulley need to be? I got a used alternator with the pulley...

Default How clean does an accessory pulley need to be? I got a used alternator with the pulley...

and I'd like to just use that pulley, but it had rust in the grooves. I sanded all the rust off, but it's not like it's as smooth as glass now. Do the grooves need to be perfectly smooth or am I going to cause excessive wear/noise on the belt? I'd swap the pulley, but I don't think I can with the tools I have.

Default actually, so grip is better, reduces slippage/squealling. As long

as there ar not sharp/rough edges to cut the belt you'll be fine.

As long as the pulley turns freely with no play, you'll be fine.
