How to Coil Packs 2.8?
I am trying to find a how to article for changing out the coil packs on a 97 a4 2.8 quattro. Mainly I need to see where the electrical wires on the coil pack goes. They seem to dive down the right side of the engine im not sure how to get to them so that I can disconnect them and re connect the wires on the new coil pack. Ive tired searching but havt had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, if you have a 97 2.8 you don't really have coil packs. You have 3 wasted spark coils up on the front/top of the motor. Coil packs are when you have an individual coil at each plug.
What you have two plug wires from each coil going to cylinders. And a plug right on the driver's side that sends power to those coils. I changed that out on my 96 2.8 (same AFC motor) and it becomes obvious how to put it all together as soon as you take the coils off. Just be careful with those old aluminum connectors when you pull them out of those coils. They can break off awfully easily.

Im attempting this job in my drive way at the moment and I cant find the other end of the wires coming off of the coils. They dive to the right side of the motor then it looks like they run behind the motor but I cant find them from there. Is it necessary to pull the top manifold off of the car to replace the coils? I have the coils free right now but I cant pull them out without disconnecting the two connectors on the coil wires which I can not find from the top of the car.

This is my 99 2.8, different heads on the motor, but the coil arrangement is the same. Is this what you see? Just pull the plug circled in red, and all the wires to the cylinders.

I wish mine were that style they look like they are a lot easier to change. Here are my coils.
These are the wires that I am referring to. I can not find where they go.

Yea that looks familiar now. I did change those on my 96....I forgot how different it was.

I believe that little black component is a capacitor to suppressor noise that might reach the radio. You don't want to cut that off or you might pick up ignition static in the radio.
