I bought used wheels the other day and paid some kid at BJs to mount and balance them for $50. Now
when I go 80mph or faster I feel a vibration. It is def. from the wheels. Even my old ones didn't vibrate at +100mph, they were perfectly smooth even with them being worn down. Do you guys think they are just balanced improperly or could the wheels be bent? I am not sure if a bent wheel would be more than just a little vibration or not. TIA
PS- When I got the wheels there were weights all over the inside of them. Is this a sign of a bent wheel? |
I'd double check the balance job.
|
no, lots of wheel weights doesn't necessarily mean that the wheel is bent, but instead that the
wheel quality isn't perfect. That is during the casting process more material exists on one part of the wheel. But it could be a sign that they are bent.
|
I think I will have a real shop check the balance when I get my springs and shocks done.
|
The wheels weren't bent...
But you do need to balance them. Their original balance was with different tires as well as the SmartTire system. Anytime you get new tires, the wheels need to be re-balanced.
The place that mounted your tires should have done it for you...and it shouldn't cost $50. |
BTW, the weights all over is exactly how they came from Edge Racing.
They installed SmartTire and the Tires. They did the balancing.
|
hehe that explains his comment about a lot of weights on one side =P
|
Yeah, smarTire has a counter weight, but its not perfect.
|
Just re-read the post.
I missed the fact that they did balance them.
Yeah...have the balance checked somewhere else. There should be no vibration. Scott |
damn. give me $50 I'll balance 4 sets for you
|
Ain't that the truth. Took two balance jobs to get it right after...
...I got my new tires w/ Smart Tire system installed.
|
I didn't think you intentionally sold me bent wheels or anything...
when I felt the vibration I thought the stupid kids just did it wrong. I remembered the kid said the wheels had an unusual amount of weights. The SmartTire explains it. BTW the wheels look great. I will put up some pics in about 2 weeks once I get my susp. done. Thanks again for the wheels.

If you guys think $50 is a lot, call Curry's. They wanted $140.....
WTF, Curry's does good work but I am starting to get the feeling they are trying to rip people off.
|
$50 is good for mounting & balancing.
I had originally read your post as $50 just for balancing. The balancing is very easy compared to the mounting. It should only take a couple of minutes per wheel.
$140 is Way too much. |
a bit better if it's with mounting...still twice what it's worth though (instead of x4)
|
Did Costco remove all the weights before they started???
Since each tire/wheel combo is different, using the old weights in their old positions is worthless.
|
I'd say the wheels is probably bent. Kinda odd that the guy would sell you them and they get
balanced and they still vibrate.
|
They aren't bent. I sold them to him.
|
how many sets of wheels have you had balanced? the machines and their operators
are far from perfect... minus the new hunter balancers... :)
|
If there were weights all over the inside, they're definitely bent or flawed.
