Default Instrument Cluster replacement. Please Help

A while back my instrument cluster failed by showing dEF on the trip mileage screen (note this is the older cluster without driver info display or engine check). After much researching it was advised to me (by someone on this forum) https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2202737.phtml to purchase another instrumnet cluster of the same part no. My question is will i be able to just plug the new one straight in or not? Bearing in mind the new cluster i bought is brand new. If i did do this would it clear the problems with my current one? or will i have to hook it up to a diagnostic first?

Thanks for the help

p.s. heres the new cluster i bought for reference

Default You'll need to recode a few things......

most importantly, mileage & cluster coding. Depending on your year & options, you'll need to code other things as well. Best to take it somewhere where they'll know...

Default Cluster Coding?

exactly what features will need to be encoded so that i can tell whoever is doing it just in case.

Plus what would happen if i just plug it in straight away?

Default Re: Cluster Coding?

Check the old one before you install the new one, to get the correct values.

If you just install it, things may not read correctly. It depends what car it came out of, and what it's base coding is.

I thought everything was stored on the ECU for the instrument cluster information?
