Jet Sound coming from my A4
 

Hello all, I am a newby to the Audi world but I just bought my first A4, a 98 2.8 Quattro. It has 124K miles and I am in the process of fixing it up for my 17 year old daughter for college. I have a could of issues that are stumping me.

First, when i start the car, there is a loud (jet-like) sound that comes from the front passenger-side engine area toward the front of the car. I have tried to locate it but have had no luck. The A4 is 30V version. Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

Probably the secondary air injection pump. Mounted just behind the foglight on the passenger side.
Either it's going bad, or something in the secondary air system has gone bad and you have a leak.

BINGO

You have a few options:

1. Either you can buy a new pump which is over $200 new.
2. Remove the pump (search for the SAI delete)
-The pump is useless and is only to ensure the car is within emission regulations when the car is started cold.
3. Leave the pump since it is for usually less than a minute.
-Mine is making a loud noise and has been for the past two years... It actually is starting to annoy me and I will probably remove it.

The pump is located in the front underneath the car on the passenger side.

When mine started making noise I pulled out the SAI relay and just live with a CEL. Good thing my county doesn't have emissions testing.

Pretty sure a 98 isnt going to have a SAI, but then I dont know all that much about 2.8s. lol

I have a 1998 2.8L QM and it definitely has a SAI.

I wasnt sure since the SAI didnt come out in the 1.8t till 2000.

If you go look in there, there is a hose connected to the SAI pump. On mine I broke the hose and this caused the noise. The fix was pretty easy, it was a pain to get the old hose off but it finally popped out. Putting the new one on was a piece of cake afterwards. Cost was $45 with tax at the dealer.

Hopefully yours is an easy fix like mine, versus replacing the pump.

From what I read, you can remove if you don't have to pass emissions and you'll be ok. There is plenty of info here on how to remove/bypass it but check out the hose.

My symptom was the buzzing and then it would go away after about 30-40seconds.
