June Max power (long)

June Max power (long)
I was reading the June max power that mentions the "Pimped 186 hp Audi" on the cover. Here's the letter to Max power... ::sigh:: As you can see.. their reply is first... I felt I had to defend the 1.8t
Thanks for the e-mail... we're looking into the disparity of performance figures as well as model year designation. By the way, a women with that much knowledge of automobiles scares us! Nonetheless, we're get back to you - MAX

Hey,
So I was at carlisle last weekend, and they give me a bag of stuff,
including your mag. Down in the bottom of the cover I see it... "Pimped
186hp Audi A4" I'm thinking, what can you do to an 1.8t to add so LITTLE
power. So here's my problems with what I saw. I'm not trying to put down
the mag, just saying, things should be looked into a bit more. Next, flip to
the T.O.C.: Page 34, 1999 Audi A4. Tailights clearly show that it is a 2000.
*hint* 1999 tailights have reverse light 2nd from top, 2000 tailights has
reverse light 2nd from bottom. So, moving on to the article. Page 38 states
"Dyno'd horsepower is 186 @ 5,100 rpm..." Let me say this. The torque
number is pretty close to what it should be. As for the hp number. Clearly,
Chris has a FWD Audi, not one equipped with quattro. His huge power loss is
unexplained, unless, of course, he looked at the dyno graph for a 1.8t
beetle, and doesn't know any different. I guess it just bothers me, because
I too drive a 2000 Audi A4 1.8t, and I don't want people reading your mag and
thinking the engine is WEAK! So let me try to set this a little straight.
Let's look at JUST the chip and exhaust. Because the 1.8t is such a
powerhouse, downpipe back exhaust has been known to add as much as 12 hp. As
for the chip... a 47 hp increase and 80 ft/lbs of torque increase can be
expected... bringing the the stock 150, and 155 numbers up to 197 hp (+ the
exhaust) and 235 ft/lbs. You also forgot to mention that with the chip,
chris commonly sees his autometer boost gauge hit 19. Once again... I'm not
dissing the hip hoppa or any of his homies, or the crew at MP. Just trying
to slow down the spread of mis-information. I would really like a reply,
even if it's to tell me I'm wrong and to go away. It would make me feel
better knowing someone read this. Talk to you later.

But 186 @ the wheels is over 210hp at the crank for FWD. That's what a typical 1 bar chip will do
given a good intake and exhaust. I don't have the mag, but I am just basing on what you posted. Not a lot of cars with a small displacement engine can get 186hp at the wheels with a mere $500 upgrade

Re: June Max power (long)
I don't know, I could be wrong so dont' get affended. But dyno is at the wheels, so the figure will be less than what is advertised by chip manufacturers.
