Just got the timing belt replaced w/out a new H2O pump. Trouble?
I had the timing belt, tensioners, rollers, etc. replaced but I didn't go the water pump. It showed no signs whatsoever of leaking or wearing so my mechanic assured me it was fine to let it be. Can anyone confirm or deny this as correct? Audi told me if I didn't do them both, the H2O pump would break in a month and I'd have a $5K job on my hands to replace all the valves.

It's probably not going to break in a month, but when it does, it's certainly going to cost a lot more in labor to have it replaced than it would to have it done along with the T-belt.

Here's the thing...(to summarize what was said below)...
You can leave the water pump alone, however it probably won't live until the next timing belt replacement.
You pull everything out of the way to do the timing belt, and the water pump is *right there*. It's easy to change it while you're doing the timing belt, and a PITA to change it at another point in time (PITA means a hefty labor charge to get everything out of the way so you can get to it).
As for consequential damages if the water pump fails...certain engines and certain model years have a water pump that drives off the timing belt. The inherent risk is if the pump siezes, it will take the timing belt with it. And when that happens, your valves hit the pistons, and you wallet quickly drains (to the tune of $3K+). All 2.8L engines have a WP that drives off the TB. 2001 1.8T's also have a WP that drives off the TB. Not sure about 2000 1.8T's (search), and any older 1.8T's have a WP that's indirectly driven off the main drive belt (no impact to TB if the WP seizes).

The timing belt in my car was replaced at 55k as part of
the CPO process. They didn't replace the waterpump with the TB. The waterpump went 10 months later at 64k. I think that AEB engines have an extra belt for the wp. If you have a 2000 or 2001, the timing belt runs the waterpump so if the wp seizes you're screwed. My wp didn't seize it basically just ate itself.
