I decided to attempt to repair the ones that I have. I have a hard time throwing away a perfectly functional device... Especially when I have two of them that are suffering from same separation problem, and I only intend to keep the car another year or so.

My fix: I wrapped a small piece of gaffers tape around the part of the transmitter-half of the fob that inserts into the key-half. This creates a firm friction fit that securely keeps the two halves together but still allows them to be separated for maintenance purposes. While not exactly "German Engineering", the fix works great, and doesn't change the outward appearance of the fob.

You don't program the remote, you program the car. The procedure is available anywhere on the net, including this site.
