Life expectancy of fuel pump
Hello! I have a '97 B5 with an AFC 2.8L engine that I still drive long distances/out of state with. It currently has 233,000 miles on the odometer. I've kept up on many preventative type maintenance issues, not wanting to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere. My car still has the original fuel pump. Is it of anyone's opinion that I should replace the fuel pump "just because" with this many miles? Or do they have a reputation for going on forever, no problem?

My old 85 4000quattro went 300,000 plus miles on the original fuel pump. Made noise but never quit. Don’t know what happened after that. But our 2001 A4 needed a new one after 225000 miles. So did the 2001 A6 with similar miles. If you have AAA and don’t mind a possible tow then see how long your will go.

Thanks Clancy! I do have AAA but am sometimes on remote desert or mountain roads. Hmm, considering your experience maybe I should replace it. Many years ago the fuel pump went out on my 1987 VW Golf in the middle of Oregon at 11:00 PM with my kids onboard, driving from Washington to Utah. I'd love to avoid that type of thing again .
