Default Loud 'put put put', poor power, car sucks

My car has been doing this **** for a while and now I'm either going to fix it, or 'accidentally' total it. It actually makes me sad to drive my car, so any advice would be helpful.

99.5 1.8t quattro tip, giac, bailey dv, k&n. most problems existed (but were quieter) before those three things.

symptoms:
* extremely loud "put-put-put-put" sound for the first 2min that I drive my car. no sound at idle, but as soon as it hits around 1500-2000 the sound comes in and gets faster as revs increase.

* very poor accelleration unless i give it a lot of throttle (and it downshifts). just feels very sluggish. recently I hit the gas at a stop light and the car reved up to 4500 through THREE GEARS before i finally got to 25.

* raspy huhhhhhh sound when accellerating, doesn't sound like boost whistle

* shuddering/surging especially at low to medium throttle

* ecu has a DTC (no CEL) that ecu is incorrectly coded, but problems have been going on since before that happened (i let someone borrow my chipped ecu, mistake)

if you have any ideas *please* post them. i want to figure out exactly what i need to do to at least get my car to not suck this weekend or i'm going to honestly figure out a way to get rid of it. will sell for $12000 in a heartbeat, columbus OH area. it runs fine other than these problems. 49k miles

Would this be safe mode you're in?

Don't think so. No CEL, and the boost still comes in (no boost in limp mode?)

Check the fuel filter.

Default Any reason you suspect that? Read linked article, seems like a pretty big job.

Plus, would it really make that kind of exhaust sound with a fuel system problem?

Default I know it's a big job. Even your link says it gets really clogged on a 99.

Actually, my real point is that it sounds like you have a fuel problem, like maybe your engine isn't getting enough.

Ther are other ways to check this (VAG?). For a down and dirty, no money spent weekend check, you could see if your fuel filter is clogged.

Honestly, I don't know. I have nothing to back my "diagnosis".

Default Interesting...

Maybe I will give it a try this weekend. Any ideas on what to watch with the VAG-COM to check for this type of thing?

Appreciate your help, too, btw!

Default Although I do have a VAG-Com

I can't help you there. I'm a complete VAG-Com noobie. Aside from checking for codes I just don't know. I haven't had any problems to check yet. Note: I said "yet".

Default Don't make the same mistake I did: Don't expect the VAG-COM to replace a weekly visit to your dealer
