Misfire problem - help!

Default Misfire problem - help!

This is on my 1997 A4 1.8TQ

Well according to my VAG tool I have a bad misfire on cylinder 1. On screen 15 I can see cylinder 1 misfiring nearly every revolution.

This is what I've done and nothing helped:

1) Swapped sparked plus with another cylinder

2) Swapped coil packs with anotehr cylinder

3) Check compression on all cylinders - ~120-130psi

4) Swapped fuel injectors with another cylinder

It still says Cylinder 1 is misfiring and it is running pretty rough. It is slightly firing because it runs even more rough when you disconnect the fuel injector electric.

4 days ago I had the same problem so i swapped the injects on cylinder 1 and 2 and the problem went away until today.

Does it sound like a bad wire feeding the injector or coil pack on cylinder 1?

Any way to tell from the VAG tool if the injectors are working correctly? How about if the coil packs are working correctly?

ahh, ok. are the ingnition amplifiers per cylinder? Where and how can I test it?

Default read ArandA4's write-up in my sig....

I would say 99.8% sure that it's the power output stage. You can test it as described in the write-up. A new one will cost you over 100 smackers. Let me know if you have any questions. I tested the whole system before I got to this. Good luck!

Ah ha! That sounds exactly like what it could be.... I'm going to do the tests tomorrow and see what I come up with. I've always wondered what was device was and why it was on top of the air box. I don't have an airbox anymore as I have K&N external filter, but I did notice the POS had cooling fins on it. I thought they were either cooling fins or something to measure the temp of the inside of the airbox. So either way when I got rid of the airbox I zip tied the POS to my air filter to get it in similar air that it was before.

So are those just cooling fins for the amplifier? Now that I know it is that I'm pretty sure.

Default I don't know what you mean about cooling fins...

it is not an amplifier, but more like a switch. It uses a very small signal to open the circuit to ground the plug so that it will fire. So, no cooling fins. But I also don't know what you are talking about. That should be your problem, it seems to go bad on most cars. Good luck!
