more problems ?
There are 2 things that have been bothering me for the past couple of weeks.
Firstly, sometimes in traffic when I brake very lightly I get this vibrating feeling through the brake pedal. It seems to always be at about 10 km/h.
Secondly, when the car changes over into third, between 1 - 1.5 seconds later it almost feels like it changes again and the rpm seems to drop another 200rpm but its still in 3rd.
Any ideas?
Thanks and cheers.
Anyway, you need to describe the vibrating feeling you get while braking lightly a little better. Is it a fast vibration or slow? Does it feel speed related? Does it feel to coinside with the rotation of the wheels?
The drop in rpm and feeling that the car has shifted again once in 3rd gear is your torque coupling locking up on the torque converter. The strange thing is mine ALWAYS locks up in 2nd gear. I can change when it locks up by slightly adjusting the fluid level. If I slightly over fill, it locks up harder and earlier in 2nd. If I have the fluid at the correct level, it seems to lock up smoother and later in 2nd gear and often undetectably. The latter feels much better on the transmission. I'm going to suggest you get a new filter and fluid for your transmission, I'm guessing the filter is getting plugged and/or your fluid level is low.
sorry, I usually have it setup in my signture.'99 A4 2.8 Tip 141 000 kms.
It is a fast vibration and it makes it feel as if the car does not want to brake. Maby the ABS that can't decide whether to engage or disengage?
Where do you check fluid level in gearbox and where do you drain and fill up?
With 141K on your car, I'd say it's definately time to get the transmission serviced. It's easy enough to do yourself, but not all that expensive at a dealership either. You can only check the fluid from below the car. It's a total pain to do because you have to raise the car so you can fit, but the car also has to be level. I've done it a few times in my garage and twice on a lift. Obviously on the lift it's no big deal. Also, only use OEM fluid, and absolutely get the filter changed. I had mine changed the first time at about 80,000 miles and the filter looked clogged.
Shoot me an email (tj at lsol dot net) and I'll send you some very good instructions to follow.
