muffler
i'm thinking about a new muffler for some horse power increase. a place in LA said an H and R if i remember correctly and only recommends a muffler not a whole exhaust on the a4 1.8t-any suggestions

Hehe.. I'd recommend not going to that shop anymore :)
You'll need a complete system (cat-back) to get any performance gains. The muffler alone is a not a restriction point for our system. The most popular systems(and I assume you've got a manual quattro) are APR, Borla (similar system to Neuspeed), Scorpion (only downpipe-back though), MTM and a couple others I'm forgetting right now. There's a new system out by Milltek through Stratmosphere tuning that is only installed on a couple cars here so far, but it looks extremely promising.
