Default MY A4 IS DEAD (or at least in partial state of vegitation)

...about two days ago my steering column controls gave up, Indicators, wipers & only side lights would come on. Got home (only a short trip), switched off then back on & all seemed fine. Last night, driving home the exact same thing happened only now the car won't start at all!!! Checked all conections, fuses, relays, even tried jumping it with another car incase my battery/alt had knackered itself but absolutely nothing. Nearest VAGcom I know of 70 miles away, not sure if any of the local boys are up to speed. Model is an A4 Avant Quattro Tdi. 1997.

Considered this as upon close inspection the switch positions appear to be a little vague... the key also feels a little bit slack in the barrel... is it a big fix or more importantly, I'll probably only be able to get the new ignition barrel from Audi, right?

........so my A4 got unceremoniously carted away on a flat bed this morning. (I don't have a workshop, the tools or the time in my present incarnation). After about 5 hours later I get a call from the garage & they say it's the starter motor...could this be the culprit of the problems above? I wa more willing to believe the Ingition Switch
