Nasty valve clatter.... what could be causing it and what are some possible results?

If clatter occurs only during cold engine condition, check oil retention valve...
I assume that the 1.8t's have them also. On 2.8's the noise will go away when engine warms up, because that's when the valve opens and no longer works to retain the oil in the head.
If the clatter occurs continuously, I would definitely worry. Have a good mechanic check it out.
