Default Need help.

Normally I post on the 80/90 forum, because, well, I have an 80, but I also have a 99 Passat 1.8T.

To the story... Today car starts idling bad, lost power, feels like I'm running on three cylinders, check engine light is flashing. It has 61K on it.

Coil Pack?????

I've heard they are notorious on the 1.8T but I really haven't spent much time doing anything on that car other than changing the oil. Can anyone tell me whether this sounds like the likely culprit or something else? Also, I've heard if it is the coilpack (or packs - also don't know how many, hence my ignorance on this car) that they are very expensive. Any insight is much appriciated as most of my time is spent dicking with my 80 not what appeared to be my more "reliable" car. TIA!

Default your coils, plugs or ignition amplifier.

my bet is on the latter.

Default Well.

The plugs probably need changed anyways. What's good on the 1.8? I've heard some use Denso (three prong) which, I prefer densos or NGK anyway. Anyone have a part number?

Also, ignition amplifier... Like an ignition module or different? What's it look like and where is it? Anyway to troubleshoot the ignition amplifier? I also have no access to codes. Thanks for any help.

Default ignition amplifier is on top of the airbox.

Don't waste your time blindly replacing stuff. Have it checked/VAG'd by a local, otherwise you're pissin money away.

Default True, but I'll change the plugs nonetheless.

What's good to run?

Those are plugs you can run with the 1.8T engine.

Default Assuming the plugs aren't the cause.... you can test the CP's & isolate which

cylinder isn't firing by plugging the new plugs into the CPs, ground each and observe which if any fails to spark when you have someone crank the engine. You can then swap the failing CP with one that fired and if that cylider now fails to fire it is the Power Output Stage .. small plastic part, with two electrical connections, sitting on an aluminum oval atop the airbox.

Default OK so.......

There is a coil pack for each plug then? See I didn't know this, as I don't know too much about 1.8T's. So, assuming plug #3 is not firing, if I switch this with another pack and #3 still does not fire, it's obviously not the pack and is the amplifier?

How much are packs and how much is the amplifier?

Also, I thought VAG coil packs were bad 2000 and up - is this still common on mine?

Default Yes that is correct. The CPs in your 99 Passat , while not bullet proof, aren't as likely to fail as

are the 01.5, 02 and 03 versions. Ours are pretty stout by comparison. They also cost a lot more than the new ones so this is good. If it turns out to be a POS (Power Output Stage) and you can wait to get one mail order, you'll do far better than at a dealer methinks.
