Need help with a problem!
First, I'd like to say that this is the first time I've posted on a bulletin board/chat room, so if I manage to do something wrong, don't get mad. Let me know what I did and I won't make the mistake again.
I have a '96 A4 Quattro with the 2.8L engine. It has 125000 miles and has had fairly regular dealer service, until last year when we moved to North Carolina, where there is no local dealer.
Now, on to my problem. We have been getting a "Check Engine" light. The code we keep getting is "Low EGR Flow". My (non-dealer) mechanic has tried to find the cause but with no luck. We replaced the NTC sensor, EGR valve, and the vacuum lines, all of which failed one diagnostic or another. Also, he cleaned the EGR port as well as was possible from the outside. The code comes back in about 100 miles of driving.
By the way, the mechanic has a great rep locally for many foreign cars (VW, Jags, Mercs, and others) and US/Japanese cars, so I went to him instead of driving 150 miles to the closest Audi dealer. I tried the local VW dealer, but he "doesn't have anyone qualified on Audi" (I thought the Passat was essentially an Audi under the skin-who knew?).
In any case, does anyone out there have any idea what's going on? Two other mechanics said the "intake should come off and be "decarboned". Anyone ever heard anything like this? Is that a big job? Other ideas?
We really like the car but it's driving us nuts trying to clear up this problem. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
