a newcomer needs help
OK, so I'm seriously pursuing my first Audi purchase, and I need some guidance. I'm looking to buy a '97 and up A4 Quattro with the 1.8T engine as a daily driver. I plan on making mods once I recover from the monetary loss I suffer paying for the car. What can anyone tell me about things to look for when searching for a used Audi? Are there any particular problems specific to these cars that need to be watched for or certain options that are must-haves? Also, what is a '99.5 car? If anyone can answer these questions or tell me where I can get them answered, I would be very grateful. Thanks!

answers to a few questions
timing belt should be changed....sport package is good i hear...i hear of often problem with the coilpacks and control arms
the 99.5 is basically when the models changed..theres few differences that u can see in tgjl's post.

Get a 99.5 or Newer (more)
They made some modifications in 99.5 to the interior (the dash) and to the headlamps. The pre 99.5 has the "older-looking" dash and the headlamps are non-projection, thus it doesn't look as "tight"! If you want to save money, you shouldn't have a problem finding a 98 A4 1.8 for under $10k. Then you can put the euro-style headlamps in yourself.
