No check engine light since swaping the stock chip back....(bit long)
Guess I'll send it back to Wetterauer to be reprogrammed. My problems started the day after the chip was installed back in February. The performance felt great, but the check engine light came on the day after I installed it. I did solder on the socket myself, and of course I figured I had goofed and left a pad unsoldered or not soldered enough, but after inspecting, resoldering, inspecting with a magnifying glass, and cleaning the PCB all looked good. But I would clear the code (16985 checksum error) and it would return shortly, so I swapped in the stock chip and it hasn't returned meaning my solder job is ok. I have programmed 1000's of eproms in my previous career as an electronic tech and occasionally there are some bad ones that have similar symptoms. The program appears to work fine, but there is a slight flaw that would cause a checksum error. The strange thing is, with the programmers I have used in the past, the checksum is checked right after the eprom is programmed, you can turn this feature off to save time, but of course it's not recommended because 3-5% of eproms won't program correctly for a variety of reasons.
One thing is for sure, I would NEVER have been ablr to figure out what the problem was if Ed Palisoc hadn't took it upon himself to create an affordable VAG tool, and thanks go to Uwe Ross for creating a very easy to use and affortable piece of software to read the ECU. If I had taken it to the dealer, they would have assumed the ECU was bad, and charged me $1200 to replace it.
Sooooo to make a long story short, I am going to contact Wetterauer to see if I can have this chip reprogrammed. The chip is used and they already reprogrammed it from 1.0 bar to .8 bar for me, and gave me a new socket to boot!
