o2 sensor....
when replacing an o2 sensor on a 96 a4Q, does it matter if you replace the whole cable or does cutting and soldering the new o2 sensor to the old cable work just as well? i guess the matter is laziness of trying to get all the wireties cut and the new cable strung through...this is the post cat-converter sensor btw.

I tried the splice method
Car ran fine, but the fault light came back on after running for 10 minutes or so. I'm not sure if I just picked the wrong O2 sensor or what (it was a part number I had gotten off this site - one for a Ford I think). Anyway, I took the $40 gamble and lost, I ended up replacing it with the correct O2 sensor with connector - that ran me $140 or so at bimmerparts.com - been driving a month with that one and no more check engine lights. After comparing the two sensors, it looked like there were slight differences in the vent holes, must have been enough of a difference to flag a problem. If you can't find a definitive answer on which generic O2 sensor to buy and splice I'd shell out for the factory one.
