Oil pump problem...

My 96 A4 with 170k miles has an oil pump problem.
Car stalled 1/4 mile from home yesterday. The low coolant temp light came on and engine quit. I never got a low oil pressure light. I was thinking it was a clogged fuel filter as I could start the car and drive maybe 200 yards before the car would stall again. It stalled when I got to my garage so I drove to town with my other A4 and bought a fuel filter. When I pulled the car into the garage I noticed the engine was real loud. I opened the oil fill on the valve cover and noticed no oil splashing, pulled out the dipstick with the engine running and the level was at the full mark. Seems like no oil is circulating. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any easier fix other that changing the pump? Like a clogged pump intake ect.. I can buy a used engine with half the millage for about the same as a pump.

So you're saying you can get a used engine with 85k for under $400?

V6's can be found for about that. My friend got a low mile 24v 6 for $5-something

complete with all accessories (PS pump, A/C, etc)
This was 2 or so years ago though and he knew the Audi wrecker that he purchased it from.

You mean the low oil pressure idiot light?

The oil temp is a gauge. So the low oil pressure light comes on and you continued to drive it. Then, because of the warning light you suspected the fuel filter?

Then you checked the oil level with the engine running and you were surprised the level was OK?

You must work for a dealer.

Makes perfect sense doesn't?

I never got a low pressure warning light...

I would get the high temp-low coolant warning light just as the engine shut down. If you check your dip stick after running your engine or with the engine running you should not be able to see the level most of the stick will have oil on it. Mine showed the level just like the engine hadn't been running for a while. The stick was dry above the level mark.

There is no high oil temp light you know. Just pressure.

There is a low coolant light that would flash.
