Passat consideration....
Whats up? Out of curiousity (assuming most everyone here is an A4 owner), how many of you even considered the B5 or B5.5 Passat before purchasing your A4? I drove both 2001 and 2002 A4s and Passats and didn't notice much difference in the ride and quality of the build (seeing as they basically come out of the same door in Germany, this is not surprising). Just wondering what made you buy the A4 over the Passat? Prestige of the four rings? or something else....

I did, and after seeing them side by side, I didn't like the Passat anymore
Aside from that, the Passat has more interior room. And if you get the GLX, you hgave quattro that is called 4motion on VW's. Can't get a manual in a Passat if that's what your after either.

You get more Audi for the money
A Passat equipped with half of the stuff Audis have standard (not to mention things you can't get at all like headlight washer, manual transmission, free maintenance, etc) easily costs close to as much as the A4, and the Audi has a much better stance and look in my opinion.

At the time I got mine, I don't think VW offered AWD...
I think when I got my A4, they had just introduced the AWD Passat (I will not buy a FWD car). I didn't know until this thread that they didn't offer manual in the Passat, so I wouldn't have gotten one anyway. Of course I wanted to have an "Audi" over a "Volkswagen", but that's not a big factor.

At the time I purchased my 2000 A4, the Passat 4 motion was sold with only the V6 & Tiptronic-
...for about $32k, without any sport package.
The A4 1.8T Quattro had the 5 speed, sport package, Bose, conv. package, winter package for about $2k less (sticker price). I actually paid $1,600 under sticker for the A4; it was an easy decision. Also, the design of the Passat was a little less sporty than what I wanted. Plus, Audi had just started its successful reign in Le Mans Prototype sports car racing.
I could go on & on about how much better the A4 is than the Passat, even though they are almost the same car.
The new TDI V6 Passat looks like quite a car. I don't believe it's coming to America though. They have so many more engine choices in Europe than us; it doesn't seem fair sometimes.

funny... i was actually looking to buy a passat, but...
thought it was the best choice for me and since I am a believer in all-wheel-drive I was going for the 4motion model. Then... sticker shock! $$$ are up there with the a4. So test drove a 150hp/sport pkg. A4. That's all it took. Placed an order for 2001 model w. 170hp and sport. it was not much more money and I know fit, finish, handling, and styling are superior. Now and then when i see a 2001 passat, i'm glad i didn't buy one. Looks old-fashioned to me. my a4 still looks suh-wheet! Classic great looking car with performance to back it up. BTW, get the 1.8T, forget the V6.

I'm the A4 driver in our family. My wife drives an '01 Passat GLX 4Motion Wagon,
And my father drives an '02 Passat Sedan 1.8t. The wagon, with the V6 and being so much heavier, isn't really a fair comparrison, but my father's sedan, being FWD only seemed to be a little quicker than my 1.8t quattro, that is, until I got a chip then a K04.

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses in such a short time. I was curious, since I just bought a slightly used 2001.5 (same body as 2002) Passat GLX 4-Motion (only 16,000 miles)for only $22k. I love the car and look at it as somewhere in between an A4 and A6. My mother owns an A6 and that is what got me into VW/Audi. Though, the A6 is a car I look to stepping up to after I retire this Passat. For the price I paid, I think I got a good deal....
