All Audi cars (all German cars?) are shipped from the factory w/ their engines covered in Cosmoline.

Exactly. Turbo broke, replaced, haven't smelled it since.

Default Ditto (more).

Mine did this when it was new. At one point I had white smoke pouring out of the front passenger wheel well (not a lot, but enough to cause serious concern). But right after that it stopped and has never done it again. I could never see anything wrong, and I've had it looked at, to no avail.
I figure maybe there was some undercoating overspray on the exhaust or catalytic converter, or maybe it was the turbo housing "breaking in".
There are no visible oil leaks on either the turbo housing or around the valve cover, but shortly after the smoke stopped I noticed a rather audible "rattling" sound under boost at low RPM ("rattling" stops if I ease off the gas). I figure this is either turbo spool up or a noisy wastegate. Time will tell...
Paul 98.5 1.8TSQ-Tip (13,000 smoke-and-burning-plastic-smell-free miles, fingers crossed)
